Turkish Foreign Ministry issued an official statement on the 24th that a Turkish ship was attacked and hijacked by pirates in the Gulf of Guinea on the 23rd. Among the 19 crew members on board, 15 were kidnapped and an Azerbaijani engineer was killed.
It is reported that the attacked ship, named “Mozart”, belongs to the Boden company headquartered in Istanbul, Turkey. The ship was originally scheduled to sail from Lagos, Nigeria to Cape Town, South Africa, but was attacked and hijacked by pirates while sailing through the waters of the Gulf of Guinea.
Turkish Foreign Ministry said that frequent piracy activities occurred in the waters of the Gulf of Guinea. It has contacted the crew on board and will take necessary actions to rescue the crew as soon as possible and arrange repatriation as soon as possible. The ship is now heading for Gabon.
