Cui Tiankai, Chinese ambassador to the United States, said in a speech on Sino US relations at the forum “42 years of Sino US Contact: past achievements and future adjustments” on the evening of 27 local time that it is a serious strategic misjudgment for the United States to regard China as a strategic opponent.
Cui Tiankai said that in the past few years, the US China policy has been hijacked, pushing Sino US relations into the abyss of confrontation. At present, the relations between the two countries are at a new historical juncture. He believed that China and the United States must trust, dialogue, cooperation and exchange, and that China and the United States can compete. However, if the United States regards China as a strategic and imaginary enemy, it will make a major strategic mistake.
Cui Tiankai also said that the dialogue between the two countries must be equal and respect each other. It is related to China’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity. China has no room for compromise. He hoped that the US side would not challenge China’s red line.
Cui Tiankai mentioned that there is a view that the United States should unite with its allies to check and balance China. He warned that the practice is to “change the soup without changing the dressing”, which is likely to lead to new imbalances and further disrupt regional order.
