Summer is the golden season for the rehabilitation treatment of COPD patients, which can lay a good foundation for the “battle of resistance” in the following autumn and winter. At the same time, due to the relative improvement of the condition, summer is the most relaxed season for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). As a result, many patients will “take it when it’s good” and stop taking the drug by themselves.

In this regard, Professor Chen Zhengxian, director of the Department of respiratory medicine of the Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat sen University, reminded: “self withdrawal of drugs is very likely to cause deterioration of the disease, such as rapid decline of lung function, symptom attack and acute exacerbation, which will eventually endanger life.”

The stable condition does not mean that there is no need to treat

Many COPD patients feel that their dyspnea symptoms have been alleviated, they think that they have reached the curative effect. In fact, the course of COPD is divided into “stable stage” and “acute exacerbation stage”.

In summer, many patients are in a stable period. Although cough and asthma are relieved at this time, they have not yet recovered, so they have to insist on treatment. Chen Zhengxian pointed out that “the main purpose of persistent treatment in stable period is to prevent acute exacerbation of COPD, improve the ability of daily activities, recover the damaged cardiopulmonary function as far as possible, prevent or slow down the continuous decline of cardiopulmonary function, and prevent or reduce various complications caused by COPD.”

Inhaled hormone is the first choice for long-term treatment

Therefore, in the stable period, we should adhere to drug treatment. This can improve symptoms and prevent recurrence, reduce the frequency and severity of attacks, improve health and improve activity tolerance. “Lung function test is the gold standard to evaluate the stage of COPD. According to the evaluation results, the main treatment drugs in stable stage should be selected.” Chen Zhengxian said.

Some patients are worried about the adverse reactions of some inhaled hormones used for treatment, and want to stop taking advantage of the remission. Chen Zhengxian explained that inhaled hormone has strong local anti-inflammatory effect and less systemic adverse reactions, so it is the first choice for long-term treatment of COPD.

Strengthen nutrition, exercise and oxygen therapy in summer

In the stable period of summer, in addition to drug treatment, nutrition treatment, exercise and long-term oxygen therapy should be done well, which is helpful to prevent acute exacerbation of COPD in autumn and winter.

After the COPD patients enter the stable stage, the loss of appetite will be improved due to the reduction of cough and asthma. During this period, nutrition can be actively strengthened. It is better to choose a low carbohydrate and high protein diet, control the intake of staple food, and pay attention to supplement fish, meat, eggs and milk; but for those who are seriously ill and have dyspnea, don’t eat big fish and meat, otherwise it will aggravate dyspnea.

In the stable period, COPD patients should also strengthen physical exercise, choose suitable exercise mode, exercise intensity and exercise time. The amount of exercise should start from an early age, do according to one’s ability, and gradually enhance the ability of exercise tolerance.

At the beginning of exercise, 5 to 10 minutes each time, 4 to 5 times a day. After gradual adaptation, it can be extended to 20-30 minutes each time, 3-4 times a day. Exercise methods include walking, jogging, climbing stairs, cycling, housework, Taijiquan, broadcast gymnastics, aerobics, qigong, etc.

Oxygen therapy

Long term oxygen therapy is also an effective way to relieve COPD symptoms. It can correct hypoxemia, reduce complications and improve the quality of life of patients. However, not all patients with COPD need long-term oxygen therapy, which can be determined after consulting a professional doctor and doing relevant examinations.
