South Africa’s first acupuncture summer school holds online opening ceremony

People’s daily, Johannesburg, January 20 (Wang Lei) – South Africa’s first summer school of acupuncture and moxibustion held an online opening ceremony on January 19, local time.

Nearly 100 people, including Li Xudong, education counselor of the Chinese Embassy in South Africa, Dr Louis mullinder, registrant of the South African Federation of health professionals, Prof Saurabh Sinha, vice president of the University of yoborg, Peng Yi, Chinese President of the University of Confucius in yoborg, teachers and students of the Department of supplementary medicine, and the media, attended the opening ceremony online.

It is reported that this is the first summer school in the field of acupuncture and moxibustion in South Africa’s colleges and universities. It aims to improve students’ acupuncture skills and clinical application. It lasts for four weeks and is expected to be held every year. This summer school of acupuncture and moxibustion is mainly prepared and taught by Dr. Hu Zijing, the tutor of master students.

Li Xudong, education counsellor of the Chinese Embassy, said that traditional Chinese medicine is a treasure house of human civilization and plays an important role in safeguarding the health of all mankind. Acupuncture higher education is an important direction of cooperation between China and South Africa. In this summer school, yoborg Confucius College provides compulsory courses such as traditional Chinese medicine culture and traditional Chinese medicine. The cooperation between yoborg Confucius College and the Department of supplementary medicine of yoborg university has played a good exemplary role.

The South African Federation of health professionals is a statutory body of the Ministry of health of South Africa, which is responsible for the registration and assessment of the qualifications of a variety of complementary medical doctors, including traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture. Dr. malind said that registered Chinese medicine and acupuncturists are very scarce in South Africa, and he welcomed and supported the higher education of acupuncture provided by yoburg University.

Vice President Sinha also mentioned that traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture, as an important part of complementary medicine, will provide public health protection for the South African people. He said that under the background of the epidemic situation, the cooperation between academic departments within the University of yoborg is full of hope. The Confucius Institute of Nanjing University of technology and Johannesburg university has been committed to promoting the scientific and technological cooperation between the two universities and the two countries. The cooperation between the two schools of Health Sciences and the school of pharmacy in the field of biotechnology has led to the establishment of the Central South Joint Research Center for environmental and chemical engineering, benefiting the discipline construction of the school of science and the school of engineering and environmental construction of yoburg University.

According to Peng Yi, the yoborg Confucius Institute is jointly built by Nanjing University of technology and yoborg university to promote scientific and technological cooperation. This summer school of acupuncture and moxibustion will provide local students with Chinese medicine, Chinese medicine culture and other compulsory hours, which have been arranged in the compulsory courses for undergraduate and graduate students majoring in supplementary medicine at yoburg University. At the same time, the school has invited the Department of complementary medicine to design compulsory hours for its own Chinese course.

Johnburg university is the first university in South Africa to provide undergraduate, master and doctoral education in complementary medicine, including Chinese medicine and acupuncture. After passing the evaluation of the Ministry of higher education of South Africa from 2018 to 2019, the course passed the evaluation of the medical registration institution of South Africa in February 2020, thus successfully completing the double evaluation of the medical registration institution of the Ministry of higher education of South Africa and the Ministry of health of South Africa. According to the South African medical regulations, graduates can register as acupuncturists and practice medicine legally in South Africa.
