On the 23rd local time, the U.S. Senate confirmed Lloyd Austin, the first African American Defense Secretary in U.S. history, by a 93-2 vote.

Austin served as the last U.S. commander in Iraq from September 2010 to December 2011, as the deputy chief of staff of the U.S. Army since January 2012, and as the commander of the central command in March 2013, and promoted the U.S. military operations against the extremist organization Islamic state in Iraq and Syria. Austin retired in 2016, and has been a member of the board of directors of Raytheon technologies since the same year.
